A taste of Brazil

Fancy a Brazilian? No, we don't mean highly skilled footballers or...er...intimate grooming. The flavour of Brazil is hitting West End Lane on March 15th when our friends at the fabulous Wet Fish Cafe are hosting a Brazilian Night, with live samba music to groove along to while you feast on the finest South American grub.

Soul-samba artist Adrianos Trinidade will be supplying the sounds from 7pm onwards while the Cafe's Brazilian co-Head Chef will be whipping up a frenzy in the kitchen...just the thing for a Monday evening--post-book browsing at West End Lane Books, of course!

Tickets, which include starter, main and entertainment, cost £25 per head and you'll need to book in advance.

Action! The Italian Film Festival 2010

Tired of shabby rom-coms, cheap chick flicks, cgi and other yawn-inducing genres that usually signal the classic lots-of-'stars'-but-little-plot-scenario, then do you and your senses a favour and put the Italian Cinema London Festival in your diary.

Running between 16-25 April at the Riverside Studio, the Festival brings together the great and the good of Italian cinema past, present and future.

As well as acknowledged masterpieces such as La Dolce Vita (celebrating its 50th aniversary this year), the Festival also showcases shorts, documentaries and some real photographic gems in an exhibition running alongside at the Riverside. Among the riches will be portraits by Sergio Strizzi, one of the country's greatest stills-men, taken from his family's private collection and enjoying their first ever London showing.

Check out the excellent website at www.italiancinemalondon.co.uk for the full programme and times.

Coming soon! Hampstead Film Society

This is just what we need as the evenings are growing longer: an early evening film club--and, even better--it's free!

The Hampstead Film Society will be meeting on Tuesdays at Hampstead Town Hall at 7pm and its opening programme offers temptation in the form of old and newer classics from around the world.

Opening night on March 7th will feature Sean Penn's magnificent and moving Into The Wild and following weeks movies include Florian Henckel Von Donnersmarck's The Lives of Others, the incomparable Ozu masterpiece Tokyo Story, Deepa Mehta's Water and more to come.

Films will be followed by discussions, led by U3A film lecturer Wally Howard, and drinks will be served afterwards.

The society is actively seeking suggestions for future screenings and you can contact them via hfs@interchange.org.uk. More info on screenings at www.interchange.org.uk/movies.

See you there--and mine's a salty popcorn, please.

Mad about the Moleskines

I can only apologise because this is not my first blog about my beloved Moleys, but I can assure you that I'm not on their payroll!

The thing is, that they've just launched a whole new range of books...and, it must be love, because I'm mad about them!

Appropriately enough, they're called the Passions range and they make the perfect purchase or present for anyone who likes to record their reading, exercising, wine-imbibing, movie watching or cookery plans or progress, stylishly and in an organised fashion.

Those with less poetry in their souls might suggest that a spreadsheet would do just as well--but, really, they simply do not understand the zen of stationery.

Come and check them out--another very cool move from the fiendishly cool Moleskine men (and women).

Make a date with Michael Palin

Carlton Primary School is hosting an evening with travel writer, actor and all-round good egg Michael Palin on February 25th.

The event kicks off at 7pm (doors open at 6.15pm) and the £20 ticket price includes a light buffet supper.

To reserve your place email lokeeffe@carlton.sch.uk. Cheques can also be posted to the school, which is at Grafton Rd, NW5 4AX, and picked up on the evening. Children over 11 are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult. There is car parking within the school grounds at the eminently reasonable price of £1.

A novel approach to retirement

Forget Saga holidays and Stannah stairlifts, this generation of over-60s are the very people that invented flower power, marched to Aldermaston and were the first to get the Stones, Pink Floyd et al...and if that weren't enough prvileges, they're now being invited to write a debut short story now that the grind of the workaday week is behind them.

Booktrust has just launched a competition especially for the over-60s; entitled 'The Letter I Wish I Had Written', entrants are invited to submit 750 words on the subject, with £500 of book tokens for the winner.

The competition was inspired by a recent Booktrust survey which indicated that nearly 75% of over-60s questioned felt that writing about their lives and experiences offered younger Britons a vital insight into social history...and apparently nearly half those taking part in the survey already kept a diary. So, if you fit the profile, give it a whirl--but don't forget to spend your tokens at your faovurite book shop (ie us!)Good luck!

Kick-back for schools!

One of my favourite sights in our little bookshop (and outside of it as well, come to think of it) is a child engrossed in a book, or excited because they've just bought one.

We all want to encourage the young 'uns to read--and with this in mind we thought we'd remind any of you with children at either of our two local primary schools--Beckford and Emmanuel--that every time you shop in West End Lane Books you can hand us the reciept back along with details of your child's form and we will give the school 10% of the cash back to be spent specifically on books.

If you already particpate, then spread the word: tell your friends and give the teachers a shove.

There are very few win-wins in life, but this just happens to be one of them!
