The Persistence of Vision is this year's theme of the 6th Annual Exhibition of the Queen's Park Group of the London Independent Photographers' Show...which, for the uninitiated, means that it will include imagery inspired by film and all things cinematic.
The action will take place between 7th--19th September and the location is the Gallery at the Willesden Library Centre.
We're promised treatments of classic film posters, images inspired by film genres and portraits of movie-goers. Bring your own popcorn!

A la recherche de Stevie Smith
The life, poetry, songs and drawings of Stevie Smith--whose 'Not Waving But Drowning' remains one of the nation's favourite poems according to the BBC--will be celebrated by fellow poet (and WEL Books stalwart) John Horder, who interviewed Smith for radio, press and TV, plus Cicely Herbert, Dinah Livingstone, Alan Morrison, Frances Spalding, the author of Smith's official biography; they will be joined by Piers Plowright, who will chair the event.
The action takes place on 8th September, 7.30pm, at the Upper Room, Magdala Pub, South End Green (opposite Hampstead Heath overground) and we are reliably informed that space is limited: so come early. The cost is £8.50/£7 concessions.

Ox Tales: give a little, read a lot
Oxfam has teamed up with Profile Books to come up with an excellent series of 4 books of short stories by some of the best contemporary writers around...and the really good news is that of the mere fiver each volume costs, 50p goes directly to the charity....and there is a truly stellar line-up of talent among the authors.
Beautifully designed and somewhat arbitrarily named Earth, Fire, Water and Air, each book begins with a peom by Vikram Seth and ends with an anonymously written touching little tale of true life.
Featured authors, all of whom have donated their work royalty-free, include: Zoe Heller, William Boyd, Esther Freud, Joanna Trollope, David Park (Water); Victoria Hislop, Lionel Shriver, Mark Haddon, John Le Carre, Jeanette Winterson (Fire); DBC Pierre, AL Kennedy, Helen Fielding, Kamila Shamsie, Alexander McCall Smith (Air); Ian Rankin, Kate Atkinson, Jonathan Coe, Marina Lewycka and Nicholas Shakespeare (Earth).
Great authors, great price and a charity donation too--it doesn't get much better than this. Find all titles on our New Fiction shelves
